“Essential Newborn Care Now!”

Training to Health Workers of Paropakar Maternity & Women’s Hospital, Kathmandu

Introduction

Implementing and prioritizing maternal and neonatal health programs at all levels of health care has resulted in reduction of maternal and newborn mortality globally in last two decades. Quality intrapartum and newborn care has shown promising results in saving more newborn as seen in many Low- and middle income countries after implementation of neonatal resuscitation programs like Helping Babies Breathe and Helping Babies survive in the last few years.

ENC Now! developed by American Academy of Pediatrics harmonizes with the World Health Organization (WHO) Basic Newborn Resuscitation Guidelines and Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) curriculum developed by American Academy Pediatrics (AAP) and is expected to be a crucial modality of capacitating more and more health workers on neonatal resuscitation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. As a standard of care for managing asphyxiated newborns, ENC Now! uses an online way to unriddle the steps of resuscitation using QR Code, Action Plan, videos and simulation videos.

The health workers training on ENC Now! in PMWH’s Hospital aims to train the health workers on different components of Essential Newborn Care using online modality guided by online facilitators as well as local facilitators for support as required. It also intends to assess the feasibility of implementing ENC Now! in low resource settings by adapting to an online model of facilitation.

Date and Venue
A three days ENC Now Training to health workers was conducted on 3rd-5th January, 2022 at training hall of Paropakar Maternity & Women’s Hospital

Methodology
The online sessions in the training included the use of a virtual learning platform developed by AAP in coordination with Laerdal Global Health (LGH) which enables remote learning. Both online and on-site,the training consisted of use of different methods and media like lecture, presentation, videos, demonstration, action plans, mannequins, equipment, simulations, role play, practice sessions and group work.

Rationale
The online ENC Now! training plays a vital role in developing skilled health workers who will be in the forefront, providing maternal and neonatal quality care services, improving key quality improvement (QI) interventions including neonatal resuscitation within the hospital.

Participants
Participants from different wards of the PMWH including the Labor Room, Birthing Center and MNSC attended ENC Now! online sessions via Zoom. The training was facilitated by a team from Golden Community with technical assistance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, International experts and Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital.
