HOSPITAL-LEVEL ORIENTATION ESSENTIAL NEWBORN CARE NOW! (ENC NOW!)

BACKGROUND
In the last 20 years, efforts at global, national and sub-national level to prioritize maternal and neonatal in policy and programs has resulted in reduction in maternal mortality by 67%1 and neonatal mortality by 50%². COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread disruption of routine health services in health facilities 3 goals to accelerate the progress to reduce the neonatal mortality to 10 or less per 1000 live births by 20354 could be severed due to the COVID-19 pandemic related health care disruptions.

The Helping Babies Survive programs have thoughtfully integrated education on quality improvement, with specific content added to the most recent edition of Helping Babies Breathe 2nd edition16. These efforts are complemented by inclusion of QI in the curriculum being produced in collaboration with the WHO, entitled Essential Newborn Care (ENC). To address the need to build and maintain the capacity of health worker on neonatal resuscitation during the COVID-19 pandemic remote ENC training, ENC Now! has been developed by American Academy of Pediatrics.

ENC Now! uses the online training to health workers on neonatal resuscitation skills. Challenges remains in terms of feasibility of implementing ENC Now! in low resource settings, adequacy of implementation to improve performance. We suggest that training in ENC Now! paired with review of local metrics will facilitate uptake and implementation of provider-initiated quality improvement efforts. The main aim of the study is to evaluate the feasibility, adequacy and effectiveness of implementation of ENC Now! in a tertiary hospital of Nepal.

As part of the ENC Now! one day hospital level orientation has to be organized in tertiary level hospital, Paropakar Maternity and Women Hospital (PMWH) with 22,222 annual deliveries. Rationale Orientation to the stakeholders at the site about the program being implemented would help them understand the importance of the program and are well acquainted for the implementation.

Date and Venue
One day hospital level orientation was organized on 16th December, 2021 at training hall of PMWH.

Participants
There were altogether 18 participants in the hospital level orientation. The participants included PMWH
Director, Deputy Director, Senior Consultant Pediatricians and Gynecologists, Consultant Pediatricians and
Gynecologists, Senior Medical Officers, Medical Officers, Nursing Supervisors, Labour Room in-charges,
members of Institutional Review Board
